Weekly Wrap Up

Another week has gone by already? I got a lot of crocheting done this week, but not much else. Wish I could get off my butt & get some chores done too! LOL

My favorite new hat from this week is the Easter Beanie. It reminds me of a little lacy egg shell. I just love it & I'm sending it to one of my photographer friends b/c I just know it will look SO cute on a pretty baby girl. :)

I decided to add Football Beanies to my AC shop. I know football season is over, but I whipped this one up while watching some TV shows on Netflix. I'm making a little baseball beanie & then I'm sending these 2 of to a photog who's shooting twins soon. Yeah, people should probably stop saying "shooting" when referring to photography... that just didn't sound good. LOL

I also had the pleasure of making a toddler-sized boobie beanie this week. (They're available in both shops.) I know these hats are a little controversial, but I just love them. They're meant to support breastfeeding & cancer awareness. And yeah, they're also funny. :) I'm going to be having a promotion involving the boobie beanies in both of my shops to raise money for an upcoming fundraiser. I'm going to donate some of the profits I make from the beanie sales. Stay tuned for more info about that.

Is this necessary? Would anyone REALLY wear this? In public? Does anyone else feel hungry all of a sudden?

Weekly Wrap Up

OK, so my new Saturday blog topic is "Weekly Wrap Up" where I'll post a couple of the projects I worked on throughout the week, share a story or two, post a recipe, or just talk about something random that happened. I don't know how many of you follow my blog regularly, but thanks for sticking around, even though I have blog topic ADD right now. :)

So, I made this little owl for the winner of a giveaway. It's the first time I made an owl with all-white eyes, but I kinda like it. I did give away the hat through my AmeliaCalvin shop, but the crazy owl hat pattern is available in my CrazySocks Crochet shop.

I really enjoyed making this toddler-size Gracie Bonnet. These are so simple, but I think they're very classy. I'm thinking M needs one in purple. Not sure if she'll wear it, or if I have time to make her one, but we'll see. These are also for sale in my AC shop... and the pattern is available at CSC. I'm doing lazy abbreviations now... learn them. :)

I bought this really lovely handspun yarn from The Fine Lime. I happened to be her 100th sale, so I got a very generous discount on it. It was mildly challenging to knit with it b/c the thickness of the yarn went from VERY thick to VERY thin... but once I got the hang of it, I think it turned out really nice! This hat is still for sale on my AC fan page, if you're interested.

I didn't really do anything extra special this week. Finally got around to watching "The Tourist" with a friend. It was pretty predictable, but I enjoyed it. The kids finished up their first session of swimming classes, and they're doing great! Since I'm paying the YMCA an arm and a leg for them to go there, I'm also signing the kids up for gymnastics. I hear gas prices are going to keep rising, so I'm scheduling the classes on the same day, so I only have to go there once a week. I'm smart. :)

I'm going to crochet one of these for all of my "Cat Lover" friends for Christmas this year. Because, as we all know, nothing says "I'm Glad We're Friends" like a cat anus made from yarn.

Even though I'm not a cat person, and I think these are quite tacky, I give credit to the lady who thought these up because they are pretty damn funny. :)

CROCHET PATTERN - Wrist Warmers

Wrist warmers are perfect for people who want to keep their hands warm, but need to keep their fingers free. You can wear them while texting, driving, knitting, crocheting, playing an instrument, sewing, playing video games, typing, and much more.

This is an EASY crochet pattern, and is a great project for beginners.

MATERIALS: H hook, WW yarn, yarn needle, scissors

STITCH GUIDE: CH - chain, HDC - half double crochet, ST(S) - stitch(es)

MAKE TWO.

CH 32.

Row 1: HDC in 3rd CH from hook & in each ST across, CH 2, turn. (30 HDC)

Row 2: HDC in next 5 STS, CH 5, skip 5 STS (thumb hole made), HDC in each remaining ST, CH 2, turn. (25 HDC + 5 CH)

Row 3: HDC in each ST across (including each of the CH-5), CH 2 and turn. (30 HDC)

Row 4-19: Repeat Row 3.

Row 20: HDC in each ST across, CH 1, turn.

FINISHING: (Make sure it fits your wrist before you finish off. If it's too big, rip out a row or two. If it's too small, add a row or two.) Fold wrist warmer in half and slip stitch evenly through both sides. After last ST, fasten off, weave in ends, and turn right-side-out.

You can embellish your wrist warmers with a ruffle, pretty buttons, appliqués, or ribbons. You can make your wrist warmers longer by making a longer starting chain.

Easily Excited...

I know I've been slacking on my blog a little... I've had some family come to town for a visit, I'm trying to catch up on some orders, I'm working on stocking my new CSC website, and I'm writing 2 new patterns. Good luck keeping up with the household chores, right?

Anyway... I got really excited this evening over something kinda silly. You know when you dream of having kids you usually think about their first words or what color hair they'll have when they're born... Well, today I was helping my 3-year-old in the shower & I noticed she has a couple of little freckles by her armpit. It made me smile! *I* have freckles, and it makes me super excited when I notice that my kids are getting them. If you know me, you know that my kids look like their dad (blonde hair, light eyes) and every little bit of "me" that they get makes me super giddy.

A couple other traits my kids have inherited from ME: My son is "pigeon-toed" and has freckles on his nose. My daughter has "thunder thighs"(YES, that's genetic!) and she bites her nails. OK, that last one isn't so cool, but she still got it from me. :)

If baby #3 (it's a BOY, by the way) comes out with brown hair, you'll hear me shouting & jumping for joy from 3 states over. I'm not kidding. ;)

Get Organized! #2 - SUPPLIES

Like me, many of you work from home... or maybe you have kids that require lots of supplies... or maybe you just love office supplies. Who doesn't? Anyway, I just want to show you how I keep my business supplies organized. They're all within reach, everything has a place, and it makes my work just a little easier.

You may recall that I have a large desk with lots of cubby holes. This cubby is directly next to where I sit. The little 3-drawer container holds almost all of my work supplies. I'll show you what's in the drawers in just a moment. My shipping labels are on a neat pile on top & my invoice clipboard is right next to it.

In the top drawer, I ~~hoard~~ contain my collection of appliqués, bows, and clippies. Some of these items are used as embellishments on my items, and some of them are freebies for lucky customers.

In the middle drawer, you will find my stapler (that I "borrowed" from the school I used to work at), my collection of scissors (hair scissors work GREAT for cutting yarn neatly), thread, tape measures, and 6 tubes of chapstick (No, I don't have dry lips... I have to hide it from my daughter). There are also some buttons & post-it notes thrown in there.

In the bottom drawer, I stash my poly bags, business cards, packing tape, little thank-you notes & circle tags. When I'm ready to ship an item, I grab the invoice off the clipboard, put a label in the printer, and gather up all the other goodies that need to go into the package. And I don't have to leave my chair.

If you're wondering where I keep the rest of my office supplies... I keep all the papers & stuff in a couple folders in my file cabinet. Pens, pencils & markers are in cups (and various boxes) on my desk. And I also have a big coffee mug with a "cup caddy' on it where MOST of my crochet hooks & knitting needles live. I LOVE this thing!

Now... I hope this has provided a little inspiration for you. Get your work supplies organized. Even if you don't work from home, you could use one of these 3-drawer bins for your school supplies, art stuff, etc. If you blog about your supplies organization, please share a link below!

Words of Wisdom...

When we first found out that we were expecting baby #3, I wasn't exactly thrilled. It happened shortly after I had finally decided that the baby factory was CLOSED. OK, so I was wrong. I had a little cry & had a brief "what are we going to do" moment. I wasn't questioning whether we'd keep the baby, but we had literally JUST given away all of our baby stuff. In fact, I gave the guy who was driving the moving truck our Pack-n-Play. Anyway... I'm babbling.

Everyone we told was surprised, and seemed very excited... but I still wasn't. Two people really helped get me out of my little funk with some helpful words of wisdom...

"Our kids are so awesome, consider this baby our gift to the world." - My Husband (who remained cool and calm while I was beginning to panic)

"Having another baby is wonderful. You will never regret having another, but you might regret NOT having more in the future." - My Grandma (I'm the child of her 3rd baby... who was also a surprise, LOL)

They're both right. :)

And I'm totally excited now... and I can't wait for our ultrasound to find out the baby's gender. :)

Get Organized! #1 - DESK

One of my 2012 Resolutions is to get this house organized. I got my old house pretty well organized, but I moved in August & haven't had the motivation to put this new place together like I did last year. I got a lot of inspiration from the blog over at Bowl Full of Lemons last year, and I plan to use her awesome blog as a guide again.

I don't have the time or motivation to do a challenge every day, so there will be one WEEKLY challenge, posted each Thursday. If you are unable to complete your challenge on Thursday, do it whenever you have time. I have 3 tips before we start:
1. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO THROW STUFF AWAY. If you don't use it, don't keep it.
2. DO NOT MOVE YOUR CRAP PILES FROM ONE ROOM TO ANOTHER. Put stuff away as you come across it. Shifting junk from one place to another is counter-productive.
3. STORAGE BINS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. Dollar Store bins are amazing little pieces of plastic that will help you regain your sanity. You'll see.

And now... CHALLENGE #1... THE DESK.

I don't know about you, but my desk is like the hub of my home. I run my business, plan my chores, make my grocery lists, check my e-mails, and do lots of other stuff right here in this corner. I usually refer to this room as "Mom's Office" to try to keep the kids away. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I decided this is the first place that I need to get organized. As you'll see in the photo below, I have a pretty nice desk with lots of storage. But sometimes all that storage space can be a curse... I tend to pile stuff in every little nook I can find, and then ignore it until it overflows. Do you see the box of 1/2 empty Milk Duds hiding on a shelf? Don't judge me.

Yeah, pretty bad, huh? Well, to make matters worse, I have additional yarn storage bins to the right of my desk & I tend to pile crap on top of that area too. And don't even get me started on that basket full of laundry. I'm lazy... what can I say?

OK, so where did I begin? I started with the top right cubby, and worked my way across and down. I emptied out each "square" and prioritized. I threw away stuff I didn't need, put buttons in my button box, stacked the yarn more neatly, made the things I use regularly more accessible, etc. I also dusted each square as I went along.

After several hours, this is what my desk looks like. I reorganized the yarn & the office supplies. I threw away a bunch of stuff & filed a bunch of papers and kids' art projects in the file cabinet. I'll give you a little more information about my craft storage in another post. I just want you to focus on cleaning up your desk for today.

And this is what the yarn storage area looks like. It's no longer a balancing act to get the bins open!

New Year's Resolutions

I usually try to set 2-3 resolutions each year. In 2011, I resolved to pay off my debt, lose some weight, and organize my house. I DID pay off my debt, I DID lose weight, and I DID organize my house. (You may recall my posts from the beginning of the year highlighting the before & after photos of my freshly cleaned abode.)

Well, we moved this year, so I racked up some more debt, gained back most of the weight I lost, and I haven't gotten the new house organized yet. I'm also expecting baby #3 in June, so I can't expect to lose weight anytime soon. At any rate, here are my resolutions for 2012...

Get this house organized top to bottom. I will probably do the 21 day challenge again b/c that is definitely a good place to start.
Pay off my credit card debt (again). I have one regular credit card & an Old Navy card... and I've resolved not to shop at Old Navy until that one is paid off completely.
Plan more menus. We eat out more than we should, and I can't even imagine how much extra money we spend when we do that. So I'm going to plan more menus, try new recipes, and hopefully we'll all be healthier, too! If I come across any super easy/yummy recipes, I'll be sure to share.
Organize my photo albums. I have stacks of photos in various places around the house & I just need to stick them into albums & frames. It would probably only take me a couple of days if I could just focus.

Tasty Recipe - White Chocolate Cranberry Shortbread Cookies

Someone brought these cookies to a Cookie Swap I had a few years ago... I've tweaked the recipe a little, and they are my FAVORITE. OK, 2nd favorite... nothing is better than my Grandma's Carrot Cookies, but I'll share that recipe some other time.

These are simple to make & are super delicious.

Ingredients: 1 cup butter (VERY soft), 1/2 cup sugar (Splenda is OK), 2 cups flour, 1 tbsp water, 1/3 package white chocolate chips, 1 cup dried cranberries (Craisins)

Beat buttter & sugar until fluffy. Add water & flour. Mix until dough is soft. Stir in chips & cranberries. Form into balls. I use a tablespoon-size measuring spoon, but you can make them as big or small as you like.

Bake @ 350° for 13-16 minutes, until cookies are very light brown. Makes about 40 cookies.

CROCHET PATTERN - Super Slouch Hat

I know there are only a million other slouch hat patterns out there, but I haven't found one that works well for me, so I whipped up my own. It's quick & easy... and is great for BHDs (Bad Hair Days). Whip up one today!

I have included instructions for both Child & Adult sizes...

SUPPLIES: M (9.0 mm) hook, K (6.5 mm) hook, J (6.0 mm) hook and/or I (5.5 mm) hook. The pattern will tell you which sizes you'll need to use, depending on which size you make. You may also want to use a stitch marker.

YARN: I prefer Vanna's Choice for this project, but your favorite sturdy Worsted Weight yarn will be fine.

STITCH GUIDE: HDC = Half Double Crochet, SC = Single Crochet, BPSC = Back Post Single Crochet, ST = Stitch

GAUGE: With K hook, 5 HDC & 5 rounds = 2" [If yours is a little bigger, that's fine.]

NOTES: This hat is worked in a continuous spiral. Do not join at the end of each round.

[Both sizes] Using M hook, Start with Magic Loop.

Round 1: 10 HDC in loop.

Round 2: 2 HDC in each ST around. (20 HDC)

Round 3: 1 HDC in each ST around. (20 HDC)

Round 4: 2 HDC in each ST around. (40 HDC)

Round 5: 1 HDC in each ST around. (40 HDC)

Round 6: (1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next) around. (60 HDC)

Round 7-8: 1 HDC in each ST around. (60 HDC)

** Switch to K hook.

Round 9-16: 1 HDC in each ST around. [If you would like your ADULT hat to be EXTRA slouchy, add a few more rounds with your K hook here.]

** If you're making an ADULT hat, switch to J hook now. If you're making a CHILD hat, switch to I hook now.

Round 17: SC in each ST around. (60 SC)
Round 18-23: BPSC (not too tightly) in each ST around. [Too complicated? Too fancy? Work a snug SC in each ST instead.]
** If you'd like a wider band, add a couple of extra rounds. If not, fasten off & weave in ends.

About a month ago (about the time we moved to our new house), my husband and I decided we officially did not want to have any more kids. C just turned 5 and started Kindergarten & M just turned 3 and is very independent! Well, about a week and a half ago, I got heartburn... Oh crap. Went to the drug store to get a pregnancy test... Yep, pregnant. We were pretty shocked at first (I was on the verge of a big freak-out) and we really started to regret selling off all of our baby stuff... but we're really starting to get excited about it now! I'm due June 14th, which seems like an eternity from now. No morning sickness yet... but the heartburn is super annoying. Anyway, there will be a new hat model joining our family in about 35 weeks! ♥

CROCHET PATTERN - Upcycled T-shirt Coasters

Don't throw away your old, holey t-shirts! Turn them into something functional! I know there are lots of ways you can upcycle your old clothes... but when one of my favorite old shirts had finally seen it's last wear, I decided to cut it into strips & crochet it into a set of coasters. I sent the coasters to my parents for testing & they LOVE them. In fact, my mom has me crochet more of them when her shirts get worn out. I like to make mine square, but you can make them any shape you like.

Supplies: Old cotton t-shirt, Size N or P crochet hook, scissors.

Prepare your old shirt by cutting off any seams, bias tape, etc. Then cut your shirt in one continuous 3/4 - 1" strip. I cut mine around and around in a "spiral" so that I don't have to tie individual strips together.

Using your crochet hook, CH 10. (If you want the coaster to be larger or smaller, chain as many as you like.)

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook & in each CH across, CH 1, turn.

Row 2: SC in each CH across, CH 1, turn.

Repeat row 2 until your piece is square.

Fasten off & tuck in the ends. Trim any pieces of shirt that stick out, or leave them... Whatever you think looks best.

These work great for big glasses of ice cold water and hot coffee mugs. Enjoy! :)

Moving Soon...

I've been in limbo for most of the summer, living with my in laws, waiting to find out where the army is going to send us next. We should have new orders by this time next week, and the it'll be a mad rush to move, find a place, and get my son signed up for school. I'm starting to spaz... I don't like to feel rushed, but I know it'll all pan out just fine. I should be able to FULLY reopen my shop for custom orders around September first. I also hope to share a few new designs with you around then, too. I hope you've all had a great summer!!

I'm still preparing to move, and preparing to send my hubby to AZ for a month. There's so much to do, so my shops are closed (but you can still purchase crochet patterns). I won't be writing a newsletter until after we move, and I probably won't blog much in the next 2-3 months.

KNITTING PATTERN - Adorable Mini Elf Hat

This is my first attempt at writing a knitting pattern. I've written dozens of crochet patterns, so I feel pretty confident, but if you find any errors, don't hesitate to let me know! This cute little hat is easy to knit & works up fairly quickly. I used a self-striping yarn, but you can use any color you like.

Materials: Worsted weight yarn, Size 8 DPNs (or 9" circulars if you have them), yarn needle, G or H crochet hook, stitch markers.

Size: Newborn.

Gauge: I have no idea, but the hat circumference should end up about 13 - 13.5" around.

CO 50.
Rounds 1-18: Knit all rounds.
Round 19: *k2tog, k8* 5 times.
Round 20-21: knit
Round 22: *k2tog, k7* 5 times.
Round 23-24: knit
Round 25: *k2tog, k6* 5 times.
Round 26-27: knit
Round 28: *k2tog, k5* 5 times.
Round 29-30: knit
Round 31: *k2tog, k4* 5 times.
Round 32-33: knit
Round 34: *k2tog, k3* 5 times.
Round 35-36: knit
Round 37: *k2tog, k2* 5 times.
Round 38-39: knit
Round 40: *k2tog, k1* 5 times.

Sew top of hat closed. Add a braid, cord, twist, pom pom, or whatever else you want to the top of the hat.

Stockinette stitch will make the edge of the hat curl, so if you don't want it like that, I recommend crocheting one or two rounds of SC around the edge.

If you want the hat to be longer & more floppy like a stocking cap, work additional rounds in between decrease rounds.

Weekly Weigh-In

I'm not sure if many of you read these updates, or care that I'm on a diet... but putting it out there helps me stay accountable. :)

I lost 1.5 lbs this week! I'm down 11.5 lbs total, and the numbers on the scale are making me very happy. Some of my clothes are fitting quite loosely now. I'm starting to be able to wear some of my medium shirts again, too. I haven't tried to squeeze into my "skinny jeans" yet... I'm still scared.

I have 9 pounds to go until I'm pre-baby weight (165 lbs). That will feel amazing! I've been going to the gym once a week... when both of my kids are at school. My son is in preschool & my daughter goes to the Mommy room there sometimes. It's very convenient. And thankfully they both still nap (most days) so I can work out at naptime. :)

My goal for April is to get down to 170. I have 4.5 lbs to get there... I CAN do it. :)

Weekly Weigh-In

I've hit the 10 pound mark! That feels pretty good! I only lost 0.1 lbs this week, but that does include a totally random 2 lb gain in the middle of the week. I have been exercising regularly & eating much better (less sugar & sodium, too!) so I'm hoping for another GOOD loss soon.

Have you seen those "cottage licenses"? You know, the ones that sellers try to get you to pay $50 or more for, and then they give you "permission" to sell something YOU made? Yep, those are fake. Don't buy them. Ever. I have done some research on this topic. I don't claim to be the guru on Copyright Law, but here's what I've found...

Wait... I first want to say that I'm NOT saying it's OK for you to "steal" ideas from others. That's just bad juju. All of the knitters, crocheters, seamstresses, and other artisans in the handmade community should STICK TOGETHER, not try to best each other. If we band together & do the right things, we can all get a slice of that "pie".

OK, so... more about the BS...

1. Copyright Law does NOT protect ideas, only their expression. (For example, it protects my tangible, written pattern... but could not prevent others from making similar items.)
*1a. If you find an item online & you want to recreate it, go ahead. As much as I hate to admit this, since I'm in the business of selling patterns, there's no law that prohibits you from being "inspired" by someone else's work. However, it's just NICE to give credit to pattern writers & designers. Do you have to? No. But giving credit among others in the handmade community is good for everyone!!

2. You are not allowed to resell/reprint patterns or other copyrighted works. Changing/altering them & claiming them as your own is also a no-no. Using someone elses photographs, graphs, charts, and/or drawings is a BIG no-no.

3. Copyrights & Patents are only good for a certain amount of time anyway, so don't get suckered into renewing a "cottage license" forever... because even if the pattern you got ripped off on DOES have a real copyright, it's only good for a certain amount of time anyway, before it becomes public domain.

4. The Doctrine of Exhaustion states that, "the first unrestricted sale of a patented item exhausts the patentee's control over that particular item." In human being words, that means that once a seller sells you the pattern, they have no control over what you do with it.

Long story short... a "Cottage License" is not a condition a copyright owner/seller can place upon the sale of an item... at least not without the consent of the purchaser. (If you paid for a "license"... Sorry Charlie, you got ripped off.) A license requires the approval of all parties (buyer & seller, in most cases), as well as many other conditions. Patterns are sold, not licensed. Anyone who says otherwise is just blowing smoke up your ass. HOWEVER, if a seller asks nicely for you to not sell their designs online... it would be nice of you to follow. If you REALLY want to sell something online, design it yourself, or buy the pattern from someone who allows it.

Some of you might also want to look up more information on trademarks, while you're at it.

I've hit a milestone. I'm finally back down to my "Pre M" weight... the weight I was before I got pregnant with baby #2. Yay! 11 pounds to go until I get down to "Pre C" (baby #1) weight.
I'm also happy to see that I've lost TEN pounds (well, technically it's only 9.9, but I'm rounding up)... it's very motivating. I had a few tiny losses these past few weeks, and I really worked hard this week... so it feels good to see a "big" loss & makes me want to keep going. I really needed that motivation b/c there have been several weeks where I've wanted to quit. But I didn't... and it paid off. :)

Lost 0.7 lbs this week. I had a couple of days where I ate entirely too much sugar (i.e. cookies!), so I'm pleased with this outcome. I've lost 8.7 lbs total... and I'm getting so close to 10 lbs, I can taste it! Also, 9 lbs is 1/4 of my goal, so that's a pretty cool milestone too.

I'll admit, I'm thoroughly sick of counting calories, and there are days where I just want to sit and crochet... but I just can't quit. I would really like to lose 6 lbs in March. I'm not sure if I'll be able to muster up enough motivation to do that... but hopefully if I can just cut back on the sugar & play outside a little more with the kids, I'll at least come close.

I lost 1/2 a pound this week. I'm actually VERY happy with that. I ate a LOT of junk food (pizza, cupcakes, girl scout cookies) this week, and I seriously expected to have at least a 1 lb gain. Most of the junk food is all gone, and I can get re-focused on my goal. I've lost 8 pounds total, and I'm really looking forward to seeing a *10* on my ticker!

Well, I lost a whoppin' 0.1 lbs this week. (7.5 lbs total) I'm OK with that. It wasn't a gain. I had a few lazy days this week, and I didn't follow my calorie plan as well as I usually do.

I just tried on my "skinny jeans"... I used to not even be able to pull them up past my thighs. Today they made it up onto my butt. I'm not even close to being able to zip them, but at least there was some progress. The weather is getting nicer here in NC, so I really need to start playing outside with the kids more. I sure wish I could burn more calories crocheting. ha.

I lost 1.2 lbs since last week. That makes 7.4 lbs total since the new year. I'm psyched! I've updated my ticker so it shows my starting weight & my goal weight now.... instead of how many pounds I've lost. If I keep looking at that ugly 186, it motivates me to get that little butterfly closer to the 150. Weekly Challenge #2 - The Launch Pad

A "launch pad" is an area in your home where you put your stuff for coming & going... like shoes, keys, purse, coats, etc. We have a tiny foyer... OK, it's not even a foyer... we have a tiny "entryway" in our house, so this is naturally the place for our launch pad. The coat closet is on the left & there is a small sofa table on the right.

This table is also conveniently located between the front door & the garage door, so it's the prime location to put shoes, purse, any outgoing mail, or anything else you might need on your way out the door. My husband puts a stack of his clean army clothes on the stool in the corner each night so he can take it with him in the morning (they wear PT clothes in the morning & have to change into their work clothes afterward). If we have company, those clothes get put away.

I only went over on my calories once this week, and I rode the bike 6 out of 7 days. It paid off!

Weekly Challenge #1 - Home Management Binder

I love making lists & organizing stuff. This was a fun challenge for me & hopefully it will help keep all of my daily tasks in check.

In my binder are the following tabs: Invoices, Weekly, Cleaning, Menu Plan, School, Birthdays, Contacts. I haven't filled out any of the schedules/lists yet, but I'll do that tomorrow.

The Invoices tab is where I'm keeping all of the invoices for my crochet orders. (Duh) I figured I'd go ahead and keep my work & home stuff together in one tidy binder.

The Weekly tab houses the weekly household schedule. We don't have a bustling schedule full of band concerts or sports games (yet), so this won't be too helpful to me, but will help get me in the practice of writing more stuff down. HERE is the free printable I used.

The next tab is my Cleaning Schedule. Some chores I really need to keep track of are laundry, dusting, mopping, and changing the bedding. HERE is the free printable I used.

The next tab is for monthly meal planning. I probably won't be able to plan out a full month's worth of meal ideas, but it'll be nice to see what we've had recently. I want to try some new recipes & get a little variety in our lives. HERE is the free printable I used.

The next tab is for the kids' school stuff. My son is only in preschool, so this will be where I keep the newsletters & info about field trips. This will come in handy a little more when they get older.

The next tab is for Birthdays. I printed THIS perpetual calendar so I could write down birthdays. I actually have a really good memory for people's birthdays, but my husband doesn't, so this tab is really more for him.

The final tab is a Contacts tab. All of our important relatives, friends, neighbors, schools, restaurants, doctors, and utilities can be found here. HERE is the free printable I used.

Well, it's been 4 weeks, and I've lost 4.8 lbs. I was down a total of 6 at one point, but I hit a rough patch last week. So when the scale told me I lost 0.6 this week, I was thrilled. I'm moving in the right direction again. If you don't know, I've been counting my calories every day on http://www.myfitnesspal.com/, and I've been doing daily calesthenics & cardio here at my house. I can't afford a gym membership, nor do I have time with 2 toddlers at home. Thankfully we have a bike and a treadmill (which I have yet to use this year) upstairs, so I can get in some exercise during naptime or when the hubby comes home from work. I thought it would be fun to display some actual customer-made items on my pattern listings. I think it would be nice for people to see that I'm not the only one who can make nice things from my patterns...

So I'm offering you the chance to share your work & earn a free pattern! Here are the details:

1. Submit a color photo of something you've made from one of my patterns.
     - The photo doesn't have to be professional. In fact, I prefer if it's not.
     - The item must be made exactly as the pattern was written. Altered items will not be considered.

Day 19 - Master Bedroom Closet

My closet wasn't TOO bad. I am guilty of holding on to clothes I *might* wear again someday, so I tried on a lot of the shirts. If they didn't even come close to fitting, I put them in the donate box. Except for these 2 really cute pair of size 10 jeans. I'm dieting/exercising, so hopefully they'll fit me again someday soon! ANYWAY... here are the "before" photos... the left & the middle of the closet. (Hubby's stuff is on the right, and I didn't clean his side.)

I organized my sweaters & stacked them on the shelf, folded all of my pants, hung up all my shirts & lined them up by style/thickness. I put all of the purses on the top shelf & got rid of all of the extra junk. I filled up a pretty big box to take to Goodwill. The whole closet (well, my side anyway) took about an hour. Here are the "after" photos...

Mohawk Hat TUTORIAL

I'm not giving you the pattern for the base hat, but I do recommend using a SC pattern. I highly recommend my "Pat Hat" Pattern, but you're free to use any pattern you like.

OK, so once you've made your SC base hat (ear flaps are optional), you'll need to mark the center of the hat where you'll attach the mohawk. I just smash the hat flat & then thread a needle/yarn along the ridge.

Next, prepare your mohawk "hairs". I've found that 4" hairs are just about perfect. So I wrap the short side of a business card & then cut along the bottom to get a bunch of nice even hairs all at once. You'll have to do this several times.

Now you're ready to start attaching the hairs to the hat. I use a latch hook tool (got it for about $1.50 at Hobby Lobby). If you don't have a latch hook tool, you can do it with a crochet hook. I hold 2 pieces of yarn at a time & loop them between the SC stitches. There's really no exact method to this part. Just follow your center string & make the "rows" of hairs 3-4 stitches wide... or wider if you want. It takes a little creativity near the top-center, but you really can't mess it up. Pull the center string out as you go.

It's time consuming, but pretty simple. And it looks AWESOME! :) Enjoy!

Day 17 - Mail & Paperwork Station

We don't really have a place where we stash our mail. We usually throw out the junk, pay the bills right away, and take the magazines to the bathroom. However, we ALWAYS seem to accumulate paperwork, crochet invoices, school projects, and other random stuff right on the kitchen table. The kitchen & the living room are connected in our house, so that's where we do most of our "business" (like this blog, for example). This is our kitchen table "before"... and it's been like this since before Christmas!! :(

I need to stop stashing yarn everywhere. I cleaned up the craft area in my bedroom back on "day 10", so I put away as much of the yarn as I could. I bought a standing file holder thing & 5 colored folders (1 for each member of the family, plus one for bills/coupons/whatever). I threw away trash, put everyone's paperwork into their own folders, and wiped everything clean. Four people can sit & eat at our kitchen table again without having to shove piles of yarn & school work out of the way. And the napkins & fruit bowl have come home... Here's the "after" photo...

Day 15 (part 2) - Vitamin Storage

As you saw, we keep our medicines in the bathroom. We keep our vitamins in the kitchen so that they're handy everyday. I don't have a "before" photo, but I just wanted to show you how I organized our little vitamin collection. "His" vitamins are in the left bin. "Her" vitamins & the kids' Flintstones vitamins are in the right bin. These bins also help me b/c I'm a shorty... so instead of getting on a chair to dig through the vitamin bottles on the top shelf, I can just take my bin down. Nice.

Day 13, 14, 15 - Medicine Cabinet & Under the Bathroom Sink

*Warning: I'm a lady... and the bathroom sink is where I store my "lady stuff"... if that's TMI, please don't continue reading this blog entry.*

On Bowl Full of Lemons' blog, day 13 was "Medicine Cabinet", but we don't have one. Day 14 was "Under the Bathroom Sink" and Day 15 was "Medicine Storage"... so I pretty much combined all 3 of these entries together. I did need to organize under my sink BADLY, and I desperately needed to go through all of the medicines too. It took me a long time to finish today's challenge & you'll see why... Here is the "before" photo from under MY side of the bathroom sink...

As you can see, I pretty much just throw stuff down there. It was not organized at all. Everything down there was sticky & NOTHING was full. Every box & bottle was half empty. There were 3 half-full boxes of tampons. There's a drawer next to this cabinet that you can't see (forgot to take a photo of it) that was where we kept all of the medicine & the razors. That's a safety hazard if I've ever heard of one! I had makeup in 6 different locations. I threw out all old makeup, all expired medicine, and anything that was just plain nasty. I used the clear drawers & shoeboxes to organize everything. I put the medicines & razors in a much safer location & that drawer is now the home for my curling irons & extra brushes. And I must admit... I never thought I'd ever find myself organizing my tampons! LOL!!! Here's the awesome "after" photo...

Day 12 - Spice Cabinet

My spice cabinet is tiny, and honestly, it's not one we use very often. I cleaned it out real well a few months ago b/c some honey leaked & the ants got in there. The top shelf is for tea bags, sprinkles & cupcake papers (the rest of the baking stuff is in a bin in the pantry). The middle shelf is for oils & sprays. The bottom shelf is for all of the spices, bouillon cubes, extracts, etc. The spices we use the most are up front & the ones we don't are in the back (Duh.) I don't have anything witty to say about today's project, sorry! Someday when I have a nice big kitchen, I'd like to get one of those spice "steps" so all the spices can be on display. I forgot to take a "before" photo, but it wasn't much different than the "after" shot. Thanks for stopping by anyway! :)

Day 11 - Freezer

Cleaning out the freezer is not one of my favorite things to do. I have to wear rubber gloves b/c that icy feeling makes me cringe & I get angry. Scraping ice/frost off the windshield of my car makes my blood boil! I can't explain it. Anyway, this was a quick task for me b/c we have a small freezer, and there wasn't much food in there. Here's the "before" shot...

I threw away a couple of things that were clearly freezer burned or were expired. But I really only had to move some stuff around so that everything was easier to see. I put the kid-friendly stuff (ouchie pouchies, popsicles) in the door. I also moved that middle shelf down. We haven't purchased ANY frozen pizzas since we lived here b/c we didn't think they'd fit in the freezer. I knew that the top shelf could be moved, but that bottom bin is always so full of stuff that I didn't see that you could put that shelf down there. When did I get so stupid!?!? Anyway, I'm off ... here's the "after" shot...

Day 10 - Laundry Closet

OMG, what a mess! I cannot even begin to describe how disgusting this little closet was. I've been hoping this challenge would come up, and it feels GREAT to be done with it. Our laundry closet is a "catch-all" for all kinds of stuff & there was NO organization going on in there. Here's what it looked like "Before"...

See all those plastic bags? I boxed them up to be shipped to a lady who crochets them into reusable shopping bags. See that box on the top right? That was full of "junk drawer" stuff from our OLD house... we moved into this house a year and a half ago. See the shelf full of cloth diapers? I haven't used them in at least a year. Time to sell them! See the pile of mismatched socks on top of the dryer? Most of the "mates" were in a pile in my bedroom from when I cleaned off my dresser. LOL! SO... after putting away all the various piles of stuff where they belonged (tool box, bedrooms, closets, GARBAGE, etc.) I dusted & cleaned off everything in there, labeled a few bins... stood back & smiled. :) I have been throwing SO much stuff away... When this 21-day challenge is over, my garbage man might want to strangle me...

We keep our kids' art supplies in this closet too. They're only allowed to color/paint under supervision, so that's what the big pad of paper & bin full of coloring books is all about... I'm sure you were dying to know.

Day 9 - Craft Area

Today's challenge was supposed to be "toys"... but I have 2 kids with 2 messy rooms, so I'd definitely need more than 1 afternoon to tackle that job. Plus, I'd really like to buy some containers for all of the legos, action figures, etc. SO, as suggested I did MY area instead. My yarn/crafts are kinda like my toys anyway, right? So here's the "before" photo...

As you can see, the yarn in the bins is pretty well organized. The pile of laundry on my glider & the random piles of crap on the tops of the yarn bins have been there for MONTHS. I sorted through all of the papers and the photographs & organized them (or tossed some). I put the stray yarn balls into their correct drawers. I folded & put away ALL of the laundry... some will go to Goodwill b/c it was sitting there so long, it doesn't fit the kids anymore. D'oh! I threw away that ripped pillow. Why was I keeping that?!? And here's the "after" photo....

That box over by the window is the sewing machine I got for my birthday (August)... I don't really have anywhere to put it, so I'm keeping it safely in the box until I get the proper craft room I deserve.

Day 8 - Coat Closet

Our coat closet is tiny, so there wasn't much stuff in there anyway. Unfortunately, it's also the place where I have to store my vacuum. Here's the "before" photo...

See that purple bowl? Yeah, that was the bowl that we used to hand out Halloween candy. The bowl was empty, but it still had lots of little crumbs in it. GROSS! I reorganized the poster tubes (I used to be a teacher, so I have lots of times table posters and stuff like that randomly stashed around the house) and lined up the wrapping paper rolls. "His" coats are on the left. "Her" coats are on the right. I also put all of the hats in a bag on the top shelf. Here's the "after" photo...

Day 7 - Pantry

I cleaned out my pantry a few weeks ago (right after Christmas), but was amazed at how much stuff collected in there again. There were only 1-2 things in there that were "expired", but there were quite a few boxes of food that I needed to consolidate into bins or bags. Here's the "before" photo...

I had to make room for the baggies & wraps that I relocated from under the kitchen sink. It's a pretty big pantry, but we have a lot of stuff! I went to the dollar store & bought some bins to help organize the snacks, baking supplies, drink mixes, etc. Other than that, I just organized the shelves into sections & lined everything up so I could see/reach it more easily. Hopefully this will help make meal-planning easier. Here's the "after" photo...

CROCHET PATTERN - Ponytail Beanie

If you love beanies, but can't wear them b/c you have a huge ponytail... your problems are solved! This pattern is very easy!

Materials: I or J hook, WW yarn, scissors, needle

Stitch Guide: SC - single crochet, DC - double crochet, HDC - half double crochet, ST - stitch, SL ST - slip stitch

NOTES: The Ch-2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch. SL ST to the 1st stitch of each round instead. The hair hole is written in the place shown in the photo. Easily move the hole up or down by putting it in a different round.

Use the I hook for Child size. Use the J hook for Adult size.

Start with Magic Ring or ch 4/join.

Round 1: CH 2, work 12 DC in loop, join.

Round 2: CH 2, 2 DC in each ST.

Round 3: CH 2, *1 DC in next ST, 2 DC in next ST* around, join.

Round 4: CH 2, *1 DC in next 2 STS, 2 DC in next ST* around, join.

Round 5: CH 2, *1 DC in next 3 STS, 2 DC in next ST* around, join.

Round 6: CH 2, DC in next ST, CH 5, skip next 5 STS, DC in each ST around, join.

Round 7: CH 2, DC in next ST, HDC in next 5 STS, DC in each ST around, join.

Round 8: CH 2, DC in each ST around, join.

Repeat Round 8 four more times for Child hat, or 5 more times for Adult hat. Fasten off & weave in all ends.

OPTIONAL IDEAS: Work 1 round of SC at end of hat. Create a shell border. Put a pom pom on top. Add a bow or flower. Make a striped hat.

Day 6 - Dresser Drawers

This task was pretty easy. I don't always keep up with the laundry, but my dresser drawers are usually pretty well organized... with the exception of my sock/underwear drawer. I usually have to SHOVE stuff into that one. The biggest mess was on TOP of the dresser. It was just crap I never bothered to put away. Here's the "before" photo... (I couldn't open all 5 drawers, or the dresser tips over.)

I folded & lined up my socks. I have socks for every season/holiday... except for Thanksgiving. I threw out all socks that were stretched out or stained. I got rid of about 10 t-shirts. I just don't think it's appropriate for a 30-year-old mother to wear a "Publik skool rilly workd fer me" shirt anymore. I also got rid of all shirts that were size medium. If/when I'm ever a medium again, I'll buy new ones. I threw out ALL of my granny panties... I know that's probably TMI, but I decided I'm only going to buy cute underwear from now on. Not skanky ones, but mildly conservative, colorful ones. You know, the ones you're NOT embarrassed for your husband to see. Oops, got off topic there for a minute. I'll shut up now. Here's the "after" photo...
