CROCHET PATTERN - Baby Beanie w/ Flower

I usually just sit down and create... but here's a basic pattern for creating this little baby beanie. I don't usually count my stitches. Making a hat isn't an exact science. This pattern is for size 0-3 months, but you can just keep crocheting until it's the size you like. If it's too small, add an extra row or 2 of increase... if it's too big, take out a row. No big deal... just have fun! :) If you REALLY need some help, feel free to contact me. :)
This pattern is free & you can use it anywhere... but if you're going to make these to sell, please give me credit by providing a link to this blog in your listing! Also, please don't post my pattern on other sites, but feel free to provide a link back to this page instead. Thank you! :)

You'll need 2 colors of cotton or acrylic yarn.

Start with magic ring/sliding loop.

Round 1: Ch 1, Make 8 SC in loop, join with SS.

Round 2: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in each ST, join with SS.

Round 3: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next, 2 SC in next... repeat around, join with SS.

Round 4: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next 2... repeat around, join with SS.

Round 5: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next 3... repeat around, join with SS.

Round 6: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next 4... repeat around, join with SS.

Round 7: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next 5... repeat around, DO NOT JOIN. At this point, your starting circle should be about 4" diameter for a newborn beanie.(I don't like that ugly seam that runs down the back of hats, so the rest of the hat is worked in a continuous spiral.)
Now: Ch 1, SC in next ST... Ch 1, skip 1, SC in next... repeat around and around, until the hat is about 3" from Round 7 to the bottom.

To fasten off, skip 1 ST and SS in next.

*Optional shell trim: Ch 1, SC in next ST, 4 DC in next ST, skip 1... SC in next, 4 DC in next, skip 1... around, join with SS to 1st SC.

*Optional flower: Start with magic ring/sliding loop, ch 1, make 6 SC in loop. With 2nd color, join with SC to any ST, ch 2, SC in next, ch 2, SC in next... repeat around, (don't join with SS... it makes a weird bump). Make 1 SC, 3 DC, 1 SC in each ch-2 SP to make the petals... join w/ SS and sew on to hat.

  2. how hard would it be to make this down to a premie hat? I have BAGS of yarn and since I had a preemie I often take hats to Duke Childrens Hospital

  4. Good morning, Adorable hat! I'm having a problem with making the hat bigger. You say add a extra row or 2 of increase. How do you increase without getting puffs or weird shapes What is the increase stitch; like 2 singles and a double or what is the science. Thank you so much for helping me and sharing with all of us. 5. Hi Janine, sorry this is coming weeks later....

You would just keep increasing in the same manner as the first 6 rounds.

Your Round 7 would be: Ch 1, Make 2 SC in 1st ST, 1 SC in next 5... repeat around, join with SS.
